Isabelle's 3rd birthday

Photo from Aleksandra, a Bubbles for Isabelle friend

Today is Isabelle’s third birthday. We will make cupcakes and we will open presents. We will celebrate her love and life, and we will mourn the enormous absence of her presence. We will cry, but we will also try to laugh because in the 2 years and 299 days that she gave us, she brought us more joy and happy memories than we could have ever imagined possible.

She lives on in us. She is – as she ever was – an equal part of this family braid of ours, which is woven tight and strong and even. Though she is not with us in the way she used to be, she is no less a part of it. Not only that, but she lives on in the 5 other people who carry her heart, kidneys, liver, and eye corneas. She is miracle to us all.

The grieving process and the shock of overcoming something like losing a child suddenly is unique to each person and to each family. It is one of the most difficult journeys to bear. We have been fortunate to be surrounded by so many loving people who have helped prop us up when the gravity of our loss is almost too much to bear. And we are also blessed to have not only each other but also our gorgeous son Sebastian, who forges us forward, making us stronger, and reminding us with each glance to him that despite our colossal loss we are still very, very fortunate.

One thing we know for sure is that Bubbles for Isabelle exceeded our expectations and we are honored to have had so many people show their love to us. Through the generosity of family members, we are delighted to announce that every bubbles photo that is posted through today until 12am (CEST) will be an Aden + Anais baby blanket given to a child in need, above and beyond our initial goal 300.

For those of you have experienced the loss of a child, an unborn child whom you grieve, or a loved family member or friend, I was sent a kind note from a person who also lost a young child, which said “they are probably having a grand time together, blowing bubbles right back at us.” That thought brings a smile to my face and hopefully yours too.

Thank you again, from the depths of our hearts.

Richard and Kelley, parents of Isabelle
And Sebastian, brother of Isabelle
